Ventilated Skylights

Among the most common and popular type of skylights. Ventilated skylights are often installed in bathrooms and kitchens because of their ventilation properties.

Fixed Skylights

Fixed skylights are similar to ventilated skylights but the only difference is that they don’t provide ventilation – they are a more aesthetically driven choice.

Tubular Skylights

A compact solution for those who lack the ceiling space required for bigger skylights. The tube can be angled in any which was to maximize the amount of light coming through.

Curb Mounted Skylights

The most common choice for skylights. This type of skylight is requires a box structure for the unit to sit on. Curb mounted skylights provide lots of customizability!

Deck Mounted Skylights

A more energy efficient option that lowers the profile of the unit and hugs the roof. A common choice for new installations for visual appeal and increased energy efficiency.

Service Breakdown

Skylight or Sun Tunnel?

The use of skylights in a home dates back to Ancient Rome where some of the most famous pieces of architecture, like the oculus of the Pantheon, feature glass ceilings. Technology has advanced quite a bit since then, creating low-cost, durable glazed glass that can be installed in individual homes.

Skylights add light and sometimes necessary ventilation. They are also beautiful accents to your ceiling, creating a dynamic space filled with the warmth of the sun.

Skylights are intended to be installed in ceiling that has direct access to the roofline – e.g. an upper floor.

Sun Tunnels

Sun tunnels are the answer to a skylight in a room that does not have direct access to the roof – perhaps because there is an attic in the way. They were designed as a sort of pipeline to capture light on the roof and reflect it into your room.
You’ve got trusses or some other obstacle above the ceiling where you’d like to have natural daylight come in? Rather than cutting through rafters and joists, suntunnels have flexible columns that can duck between and around obstacles!

Both sun tunnels and skylights can be installed within a few hours. They often come with trim kits so that no framing, wall repairs or painting is required after installation!

We offer a range of options to accessorize your new skylights including blinds (solar or manual). You can choose between room darkening blinds, light filtering blinds or a combination of the two! If you go with the solar blinds, you can then add on climate control kits that automatically adjust the position of your blinds (and ventilation of your skylights too)!

Don’t skylights leak and have to be replaced frequently?

Previously dome skylights were made of 2 layers of acrylic in the shape of a dome and could not be sealed tight enough to create a vacuum in the same way as the 2 layers of flat glass that are used today. Velux actually sells The No Leak Skylight, which carries a 10-year installation warranty, plus 20 years on glass and 10 years on product – not to mention the 5 years on blinds and controls.

Keep in mind that we are talking about installing a window on a water shedding system (the roof) and in extreme cases of cold weather, damming can occur and still cause problems around the skylight no matter how well installed. Roof Maintenance will be necessary.

My ceiling is flat. Can I still get a skylight?

Yes – we can install a sun tunnel to reflect light into your room without having to change the design of your ceiling.

What if my skylight leaks when it rains?

When we install your skylight we do so in such a way that leaks during heavy rainfall will not occur. If you do not maintain them (e.g. prevent ice damming), you are at risk of possible leaks in the winter, when the wood frame contracts due to the cold. It is important to regularly check your skylight and keep it in good shape.

Will hail break the glass?

No. All Velux skylights are built with tempered glass, which is extremely resilient to impact. If you are worried about hail or other debris breaking your skylight or sun tunnel, ask us about laminated glass.

Will the sun tunnel ruin my home’s insulation?

Not at all. When we install sun tunnels, we ensure that the insulation is sealed in properly. This involves a second clear panel sealed with a rubber gasket to prevent heat escaping the room.

What does it cost to install?

There are many factors that influence the price of your skylight or suntunnel. Depends on many factor including:

  • The size of the skylight and whether it is in stock or is a custom order
  • Whether it is non venting, manually venting, or solar venting
  • Will you have blinds? Will they be manual or solar and will you want a home automation kit so you can control the blinds from your phone for example?
  • Will you choose dual or triple pane glass and will it be laminated?
  • If you go with a sun tunnel, what size will it be? Will it be rigid or flexible? Will you require any extensions?
  • The pitch and condition of your roof
  • Will we go with an in stock or custom flashing kit?

Can I buy materials from the market and hire Kovar Contracting for the installation only?

We do not recommend this. When we prepare the materials for your skylight or sun tunnel project, we can guarantee the materials, craftsmanship and installation. If you purchase materials from the market, we’re not able to offer you the manufacturer’s non-prorated extended warranty. In order to make sure you’re getting the best price the market can provide without having to purchase from outside suppliers, we guarantee a price match and only use the best, time-tested products for your job.

How Do I Decide Which Model of sun Tunnel is Best for My House?

We’ll make the recommendation during our consultation. Our recommendation will be based on whether you need rigid or flexible sun tunnel, the length (max 8” with flexible sun tunnels) and diameter of the tube (available in 10”, 14” or 22” depending on model)

How Long Does it Take to Install?

A few hours typically. Velux sun tunnels come with a pre-assembled ceiling ring and paintable ceiling trim ring to complete any look.

Will this Install on My Steep Roof?

TMR Sun Tunnel installs on roofs with slopes between 15° (3:12) and 60° (20:12).

Does My Roof Have to Face South?

With certain models this is suggested but with the TMR model this is not necessary due to the pitch of the roof dome termination. Always suggested to be installed closest to the peak of the roof.

Can We Install Blinds After the Fact?

Absolutely. For Velux skylights, we can recommend and install venetian blinds, shades or light filtering, depending on the particular skylight you installed.
We can even install a light kit so that your sun tunnel can replace an existing light fixture yet still keep the function of the light and switch.

My old Skylight is not the same Dimensions as a Velux. Can it still be replaced?

Curb mounted skylights are excellent for replacing old, leaking sunlights because they are more compatible with existing hole sizes as they are placed like a cap on top of a constructed box-like structure that replaces your previous hole
