CHOOSING THE RIGHT TYPE OF SKYLIGHTS FOR YOUR HOME.

Different Types of Skylights Installation

Ventilated Skylights

Among the most common and popular type of skylights. Ventilated skylights are often installed in bathrooms and kitchens because of their ventilation properties.

Fixed Skylights

Fixed skylights are similar to ventilated skylights but the only difference is that they don’t provide ventilation – they are a more aesthetically driven choice.

Tubular Skylights

A compact solution for those who lack the ceiling space required for bigger skylights. The tube can be angled in any which was to maximize the amount of light coming through.

Curb Mounted Skylights

The most common choice for skylights. This type of skylight is requires a box structure for the unit to sit on. Curb mounted skylights provide lots of customizability!

Deck Mounted Skylights

A more energy efficient option that lowers the profile of the unit and hugs the roof. A common choice for new installations for visual appeal and increased energy efficiency.

Before & After a Sun Tunnels Installation

In the “before” photo, the home appears dimly lit and lacking natural light, with certain areas cast in shadows. In the “after” picture, post-sun tunnel installation, the transformation is evident as sunlight floods previously gloomy spaces, creating a brighter and more welcoming atmosphere.

The practical addition of sun tunnels not only enhances the visual appeal of the home but also improves its functionality by reducing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours.

SERVICE BREAKDOWN

Skylight or Sun Tunnel?

Skylights

Skylights are anything but new. They have been installed in homes and buildings as far back as the Roman Empire. However, technical know-how has moved on since then and skylights are much more durable and less expensive than they used to be back then. Further, modern skylights can be opened, providing a source of ventilation. Skylights are a perfect option for providing natural light to your rooms below the roof.

Sun Tunnels

Unlike Skylights, sun tunnels do not require your space to be located below the roofline. They act as a catalyst of sorts, channeling the natural light from outside and carrying it into your room below. They can be installed to go between and around objects, making them very flexible and a great option to circumvent attic spaces. Much like skylights, sun tunnels don’t require a lengthy process to be installed – it usually takes just one day! Sun tunnels are often include trim kits to avoid costly post-installation wall repairs or paint jobs.

Accessories

We know that no two houses are alike and that customers have differing ideas. That is why we offer a variety of accessories to include with your skylights, from darkening to light-filtering blinds. Our solar blinds come with an optional climate control kit, that automatically alters the position of the blinds and/or the ventilation of your skylight to ensure your skylit space is always fresh and pleasant.

Q

Skylight or Sun Tunnel FAQ’s

Can Skylights and/or Sun Tunnels Be Installed on a Flat Ceiling?

Sun tunnels can be installed on a flat ceiling as well.

How Often Do Skylights Have To Be Replaced?

Older generations of skylights could not be sealed to the degree that today’s skylights are. Thanks to advances in engineering and technology, modern skylights are made to last, and Velux’s No Leak Skylights include a number of warranties: 10 years on installation, 20 years on the glass, 10 years on the product, and 5 years on the blinds and controls. However, it is important to note that the lifespan of your skylight does depend on proper roof maintenance. Cold weather – like, for example, Ottawa’s long winters – can still cause issues for skylights. Make sure to have your roof inspected at least twice a year so that any problems affecting your skylight can be addressed in a timely fashion.

Will My Skylight Leak When It Rains?

Even the heaviest rainfall will not cause your Velux skylight to leak. However, it is important to properly maintain and inspect them twice a year. During winter, the cold weather can cause the wooden frame to contract, potentially harming the sealed edges of your skylight. The longer you leave such an issue unattended, the bigger the problem will become. But as long as your roof and skylights are properly maintained, your skylight should not leak.

Can Hail Break the Skylight?

No, hail will not break your skylight. Velux’s skylights are made of tempered glass and very resilient.

Does a Sun Tunnel Affect My Insulation?

No, the installation of a sun tunnel does not affect your house’s insulation. We always make sure that the roof is correctly sealed again by installing a second clear panel with a rubber gasket.

How Much Does a Skylight or Sun Tunnel Cost?

Like most construction work, the answer depends on a few variables, for example how big the skylight is going to be, whether it is a custom order, the kind of venting (non-venting, manual, or solar), whether or not blinds will be installed as well and what type, and many others.

Can You Install the Skylights With My Own Materials?

Technically that is possible, but we would strongly advise against it. We guarantee that our materials are of the highest quality. Using your materials means that we cannot guarantee the manufacturer’s non-prorated extended warranty.

How Do I Know Which Sun Tunnel Model To Install In My House?

Once you have made the decision to install a sun tunnel in your home, the next question is: which kind of sun tunnel? Since it depends on the individual case, we will make recommendations based on the situation and consult with you on what avenue to take.

How Long Does The Installation Take?

On average, the installation of a skylight or sun tunnel should be done within a few hours.

My Roof Is Steep. Will I Be Able to Install a Sun Tunnel?

TMR sun tunnels can be installed on roofs with slopes ranging from 15-60 degrees. Don’t worry if you are not sure how steep your roof is – we can take a look.

Does It Matter Which Side the Roof Faces?

While it is recommended for some models that the roof faces south, this is not necessary with the TMR sun tunnel model.

Can Blinds Be Installed Subsequently?

Yes. If you are unsure whether you want blinds added to your Velux skylight or not, don’t worry. Blinds can be added at a later date.

Velux Does Not Offer the Same Size Of My Existing Skylight. What Can I Do?

This is actually less of a problem than you might expect. Curb-mounted skylights are similar in size to older skylights. A box-like structure will be placed on the existing hole and the curb-mounted skylight will be placed on top of it – almost like a cap.
