3 Reasons to Remove The Snow From Your Roof
Your roof is a protective layer against the elements and severe weather. Snow presents a special kind of challenge because, unlike rain or wind, it accumulates on your roof. This can create three distinct problems.
Number one is that excess snow can cause structural damage to your roof because of its weight. The more snow accumulates on your roof, the higher the stress on the structure is.
Secondly, there is the issue of ice damming. Ice damming occurs when melted snow freezes over again and creates a damn on the edge of your roof. This dam prevents new snow from sliding off your roof. Further, ice damming may cause water to gather under your shingles and enter your house.
Finally, excess snow can create icicles and/or cause large chunks of ice to fall off your roof. This presents a source of potential injury to people or damage to property. Clogged eavestroughs and downspouts, insufficient insulation and stale attics may contribute to this issue.
Kovar Roofing can help you prevent these issues. We offer Rooftop snow and ice removal, either on-call or on a pre-arranged schedule.

Snow Removal FAQS
I Only Have Snow On The Edge Of My Roof. Do I need removal services?
If snow only accumulated on the edge of your roof it is still necessary to have it removed because the snow acts as a sort of dam that will not let water flow off properly. This can create ice dams or lead to leaks in your roof. In another scenario, the snow can loosen and fall, injuring a person or causing damage to property. So yes, you should remove the snow even if it is only on the edge of your roof.
When Do I Need Heat Trace Cables Or New Insulation?
As a rule of thumb, you should have your insulation inspected and potentially upgraded in certain intervals, for example, every ten years. New insulation can help you save on heating costs. If your roof is susceptible to ice dams, heat trace cables can provide help. However, they will not be able to do the entire job and you will still need to have your snow removed from the roof regularly in order for the heat cables to do their job properly.
